Niespodzianką był też werdykt Akademii w kategorii: najlepszy scenariusz adaptowany. Zwyciężył w niej Geoffrey Fletcher za obraz "Precious". Łamiącym głosem podziękował on za nagrodę, głównie swojej rodzinie. Nie obyło się oczywiście bez sentymentów w stylu: "Moja mama jest moim aniołem".
Poza Waltzem, pozostałe aktorskie Oscary także zgarnęli faworyci.
Najlepszym aktorem został Jeff Bridges za rolę Bada Blake'a w "Szalonym sercu", a aktorką Sandra Bullock, która wcieliła się w autentyczną postać Leigh Anne Touhy w filmie Johna Lee Hancocka "The Blind Side". Co ciekawe Bullock została pierwszą osobą, która w tym samym roku otrzymała Oscara i Złotą Malinę. Tę drugą "nagrodę" otrzymała zaledwie kilkanaście godzin przed galą w Teatrze Kodaka za rolę w filmie "Wszystko o Stevenie".
Oscara dla najlepszej aktorki drugoplanowej otrzymała Mo'Nique ("Precious").
Niespodzianką było także rozstrzygnięcie w kategorii najlepszy film nieanglojęzyczny. Triumfował w niej argentyński obraz "El Secreto de Sus Ojos". Film wyreżyserowany przez Juana José Campanellę zdystansował m.in."Białą wstązkę" Michaela Haneke'go i "Proroka" Jacquesa Audiarda.
Najlepszą animacją został zgodnie z przewidywaniami "Odlot" (otrzymał też Oscara za najlepszą muzykę), a najlepszym dokumentem "Zatoka delfinów" ("The Cove") Louie Psihoyosa.

Wygrali Barney Burman, Mindy Hall i Joel Harlow, którzy w filmie J.J. Abramsa stworzyli świat "Star Treka".
